On Saturday Jeff, Ryan and I road-tripped to Ferndale, WA to visit the 2nd annual “Makayla’s Street Jam”. Though we had seen photos of it last year, it was impossible in pictures to capture the amazing spirit and enthusiasm of this event. We had to park blocks away as they literally took over multiple streets in downtown Ferndale! As we walked towards the tournament, the thumping of music and sounds of bouncing basketballs literally took over! There were 90 teams participating in this 3 on 3 competition, multiple divisions, food trucks, vendors, a DJ and so many fans and spectators!
We had the chance to meet and talk with many of the people who loved and knew Makayla, including her parents Karen and Rick. Not only was she a stunningly gorgeous girl, but it seems Makayla was a fierce and competitive athlete. Her nickname was “nails”, because she was as tough as them – and three on three tournaments were her favorite. It was overwhelming to see so many sponsors, volunteers and donors who were a part of making this fantastic event happen in her honor. Here are a few of the photos I took…
(and a special shout out to Jake Locker because of course…Go DAWGS!!)
Thank you so much to this incredible community for your vision, heart and investment in the work that is happening at the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research through Makayla’s Street Jam! We feel privileged to be a small part of it!
